A Shift?

I don’t do colour wedding photography. Not much anyway. That’s what I tell everyone. Pigs’ll fly before I shoot lots of colour.

Thing is, is that really true?

Looking at some of my latest work, I have to ask whether I’m experiencing a shift.

Take these photographs from a recent wedding, for instance. It was only after I’d uploaded them on to the blog (originally with the intention of running them without text) that I realized half of them were colour pictures.

Is it a blip? Or the start of a bigger development in my shooting style? Should I even care?

Maybe not. But in light of what I’ve said about colour photography in the past, all I can say is that if you are a pig farmer you’d better go and check your livestock are still on the ground.

Wow. The photo of the bride in the car is amazing. Timing it to allow the dark reflection to look through and using the rest of the reflection to add context is genius! The colour photos work really well too. The style is quiet different to the work you usually produce. I’m not sure I would have picked them as yours. But that’s not a bad thing, they are great photos, and I don’t think there’s any harm in mixing black and white with colour.

    Cheers Kevin,

It’s all part of a growth process, which I’m guessing never really ends. I haven’t been shooting long enough to have fully developed a distinctive style that is unique to me. My photography has traits, but perhaps it’s not the finished item yet.

    I’m having fun, though.

Loving the new departure Roger – the colour shots are just as beautiful as your black and white images.

    Hi Roger,

    Great work, as usual!

I’m assuming you “shoot” in colour all the time… and convert digital files to B&W during post processing.

I’ve always figured there’s no point throwing away original image data (including colour info) in-camera. Better to make those decisions after shooting.

Interested to hear your perspective on that.

    Hi Calvin,

    Thanks for your comment.

I shoot RAW image files and convert them to B&W in post. I agree with you that it’s best to make the decision afterward. There is constant talk of a bespoke B&W DSLR to follow the one Kodak used to produce. Regardless of my love of B&W, it wouldn’t be the camera for me for the reason you outlined.

That said, if it is ever manufactured I will likely lust after one.
